North Kohala remains very much today as it was from it’s beginning, rooted in the ancient Hawaiian history of royals, warriors and cowboys. As the birthplace of King Kamehameha the Great, pride runs deep in this community with generations remaining as entrusted protectors of this sacred land and keepers of its temples (heiaus). Encompassing the north end tip of the island, it reaches from low-elevation gated luxury communities to the south (Kohala By The Sea, Kohala Waterfront, Kohala Estates and Kohala Ranch) north to the wild grasslands of retired sugar plantations and further north to the tropical, lush and remote valley of Pololu. The majestic spirit of North Kohala’s original inhabitants is felt throughout this area and it is where life has found a way to slow down.
